So yesterday, Uncle was passing along this meme from the Firing Pin Journal
One Handgun, One Rifle, One Shotgun. You are able to choose just one of each for self defense with NO modifications.
My answer dun got et by Unc’s software, but it is still up at FPJ
Pistol: Browning Hi-Power
Shotgun: Remington 870
Rifle: PTR-91 in .308
I went with items I already own because, well, I’ve already thought about this.
However, after some thought, I decided that I hadn’t.
So I’m going to modify it: I have an old 4in. Ruger Security Six that I take with me everywhere. If I look unarmed, don’t be fooled, the Security Six is within arms reach. For its years of reliable service after taking more abuse than it deserves, I’m going to elevate it above my currently favored Hi-Power. That, and I can shoot .38’s out of it too.
Don’t feel you have to leave your choices here (though you are certainly welcome to do so). I’m just clarifying things.
Oh, and why would I pick those over anything else? Because whenever I see this meme pop-up I think of this:
An Army of Marias
One man swings a thick metal chain. Another grips an ax. An older gentleman favors a wooden pole. And a 20-year-old spoiling for a fight has prepared a garrote – a menacing wire tied between two handles – to confront any intruders.
These and hundreds of other survivors of Chile’s devastating earthquake have organized neighborhood watch groups, arming themselves and barricading streets to protect their damaged homes from looters. The groups have stepped in as police were overwhelmed by looting and soldiers were slow to restore order after an earthquake and tsunami.
“We take care of ourselves here,” said 51-year-old Maria Cortes. She stood watch in Poblacion Libertad – “Freedom Community” – a gritty collection of small duplexes along an industrial road in the port town of Talcahuano. About 2,000 people live here around a common area three football fields long.
“A menacing wire”? I’ve got a lamp cord at home that’ll do the same thing. Should I consider myself menaced?
Not sure why it ate your comment. didn’t find it in my spam thing.
No worries. Gave me a reason to bring it up here.
Handgun: 1911
Shotgun: Winchester Defender
Rifle: can’t decide between my AR and my M1 Carbine. If I lived in a free state, I’d go with the AR minus bullet button and fed by a 30 rounder.
I’ll take with me what I got and leave the shotgun to the wingshooters – it’s too pretty for TEOTWAWKI. Something in .45ACP and something in 5.56 – I don’t have a fantasy set-up. I’d leave the match-ARifle behind and the M1 Garand since I don’t have enough .30-06 ammo for it.
Easy,,,
My Model 50
My Remington/Rand.
My .308 Jungle Enfield.
S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman. Same reasons as your Security-Six.
Remington 870 riot gun. 18″ bbl, 7 rounds.
PTR-91.
Yep, they’re all in the safe.
Lots of rendundancy in the house among the .357/.38 platforms, and in .45 with the 1911s.
Pity the standard chambering for G-3/CETME/PTR is the 7.62 Nato. I’d be thrilled to have one in 6.5×55.
