Via D.W. Drang at The Clue Meter, we get this lovely bit of news
Utah has an interesting set up for Concealed Carry: You have to take a class to get their permit, it is otherwise shall-issue. The class has to be conducted by a Utah-Certified instructor, but, once the instructor is certified, he or she can conduct the training pretty much anywhere.
So, it develops that a Utah-certified instructor here in the Puget Sound region is arranging to conduct UT-Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP) classes at some of the local Wholesale Sports stores. (Formerly known as Sportsmans World.)
A UT-CFP is valid in 29 states: AL, AK, AR, DE, GA, ID, IN, KY, LA, MN, MS, MO, MT, NE, NM, NC, ND, OH, OK, PA, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, WY & WA. Of course, if you live in WA, you have a WA permit–right? (I am wondering why Michigan is not on that list, as the last I heard Michigan was in full compliance with the 10th Amendment, and offered “full faith and credence” to any other states’ concealed carry license; possibly it’s because you have to be a resident of the state that issued the permit for them to recognize it.)
The instructor, Shawn, tells me that he has arranged to conduct the training at the Federal Way location on December 20th and January 16th, and the Lacey location on
DecemberJanuary 24th.Â(I know what you’re thinking, “What a great Christmas present!”)Â He is also trying to make arrangements for a class in the Silverdale store on December 19th, so if you are, or know anyone who is, out that way, have them call the store and ask about the class*…ÂThere may also be one or moreThere will also be a class at the Burlington location on January 17th.

He is right that this would make a most excellent Christmas present.
Whoever, I’d like to point out that the second Federal Way date is on my birthday. Not only that, but that location is less than 5 miles from my house. So now I have to go!
And I will be there.
If you’re local, you should be too.
Yes, Michigan recognizes out of states permits from non-residents’ home state.

Hm. Might have to send my father that way…
Note that the December 24th date was in error, the second Federal Way class is January 24th.
Got my UT permit awhile back at a class that was organized by a member from THR. I enjoyed it, the instructor was competent and engaging.
Now I need to figure out how to get an Oregon permit.
Mike,
For the Oregon CHL all that is required is that a person takes a firearms safety course focusing on handgun safety and that is certified by the NRA or taught by an NRA Certified Instructor. Requirements to be a Utah CFP Instructor are that you are either a POST Certified Police Instructor or NRA Certified Pistol Instructor. Your instructor was likely NRA Certified which means that you meet the traininig requirement.
I suggest that you contact the Grant County Oregon Sheriff’s Office for your Oregon CHL. Their elected Sheriff has stated that he firmly believes in non-resident CHL’s and will issue to anyone who meets the other qualifications. He is also flexible on the “compelling business in Oregon” requirement. Grant County Oregon is in Easter Oregon, so it’s a bit of a drive, but CCW friendly is CCW friendly.
I am the instructor who will be teaching the Utah courses at the Burlington, Federal Way and Lacey Wholesale Sports locations. Anyone with questions about the class should feel free to contact me at [email protected] .
