Christmas Weekend Question

Lex Green over at The Chicago Boys blog asks about the idea of a second Contract with America to help the right retake Congress and what folks on the right would like to see in it.

I’ll go first

1. That they will promote the passage of a Constitutional Amendment expressing the right to own firearms, with a distinct definition that they are vital for self defense of citizens from both criminals and the government.

2. That they will promote the passage of a Constitutional Amendment repealing the Anchor Baby portion of the 14th Amendment. Something that state that at least one of the biological parents must be a citizen for the child to gain citizenship.

3. I’ll take just about anything that reaffirms the 10th Amendment.

4. A national Right to Work law.

OK, that’s enough from me.

Now you.

You start the post with concerns for the constitution and then add the “National right to work law”. Where did that show up in the document you use as a background?

I would advocate for elimination of the FED and a return to a precious metal standard (gold, silver, copper, lead, what ever). While this could not be achieved quickly, it should be a national goal. Having our money backed by something besides the Chinese can’t help but be good. It is also in the constitution where it is noted that coining money and establishing the alloy there of is one of the few actual responsibilities that the congress has.

Acknowledgment that statehood carries adult responsibilities. If a state defaults on those responsibilities (as for example declaring bankruptcy), then it looses its status as a state and reverts to territory status. Washington appoints a territorial governor, and its congresscritters and senators are out of their jobs. This status continues until such time as the territory demonstrates it has its act back together (which implies a period of several years), after which it can reapply for admittance to the Union. Also, during this period, its populace cannot vote in national elections, since they’re no longer a state.

    California, anyone?

  3. “right to work” laws mean “right not to join a union”, so that would fall under the first, “free assembly” and the implied right not to assemble and associate with a group.

If the (R) a-holes are going to pull this off, they really need to say something beyond what they did last time, i.e. “we’ll bring it to a floor vote where we know it will fail”. They need to do something like:

When we regain congress and the presidency we will do the following:

    1. Repeal the healthcare boondoggle fully, replacing it with a system where every consumer shopping for services helps to drive down prices and opens markets world wide

    2. repeal blah, blah blah and blah gun laws, and pressure all states to honor their citizens RKBA by doing blah.

    3. reduce the size of non-defensive government by 20%, which will translates into spending X dollars less, and forcing x number of government employees to retire or find or create for themselves private sector jobs.

    4. …

And then at the end they ought to say something like “until we regain congress and the presidency, we will still fight like a bastard, using every trick in the book to meet the above agenda”

I really do not believe it is in the republican party to do the right thing here in the right way, though.

Expect both the (D) and (R) a-holes to continue the standard mischief, to sabotage any possible viable third parties.

Expect the Libertarian party to continue to be an embarrassment to those who seek liberty for the foreseeable future.

  4. JebTexas says:

Only one solution… if the bastards have no money, they can not steal it. Tax revolt 2010. Don’t send the IRS anything. Pass it on.

  5. Kristopher says:

    Repeal the 17th amendment.

Make Senators work for their state legislatures again.

  6. Grumpy Old Ham says:

A Constitutional Amendment that defines specifically what *is* and *is not* Interstate Commerce, to finally put some limits on the abuse of the original clause to fit whatever cockmamie purpose Congress and the judiciary decides is necessary. If not crafted carefully, this Amendment might have some chilling effects on Internet commerce, but I’d almost be willing to take that gamble to put an end to other abuses of power.

  7. Phil says:

I can’t say that I disagree with anything y’all have posted.

    Keep it going.

  8. Rivrdog says:

Constitutional Amendment for a balanced Federal Budget, together with prioritization of what it must be spent on.

Removal of the Congressional bribery system (earmarks)

Removal of the President’s Executive Order privilege…O has abused his already: http://rivrdog.typepad.com/rivrdog/2009/12/gunnies-this-obamination-can-affect-you.html

There’s more, much more, but the gout won’t let me sit here any longer.

  9. AnejoDave says:

repeal the 16th and 17th amendments. Institute the Fair Tax. Secure the borders, kill the terrorists, punch the hippies.

  10. Roland says:

Being first don’t mean S&^t, I guess that I will have to plead brain f*rt or something like that. In retrospect, I do recognize the phrase ask for mercy for that blunder.

  11. Ed Price says:

My primary suggestion is that ANY outlay of funds to be spent from the Federal Government must be included in an appropriations bill, debated in committee. Absolutely NO funds may be added as an amendment to any other bill facing either House of Congress.

If they decide on another Contract with the voters, we are going to need some assurances that they will carry through on their promises and not become Democrats after being elected. I don’t care if they call it a litmus test, the term doesn’t offend me. Liars do!

  12. Bob Hotchkiss says:

Any contract with America should include the following:
    1. Term limits to keep the clowns from staying too long and building a power base.
    2. A balanced budget requirement.
    3. I like the idea of a state reverting to a territory if the state goes bankrupt.
    4. Repeal any and all health care measures and acknowledge that they are unconstitutional.
    5. Guarantee a strict interpretation of the U. S. Constitution and an intent to protect the rights spelled out in it as well as meeting the responsibilities in it. This DOES NOT include providing for my well being or the groceries and health care of illegal immigrants.
    6. Close the borders and begin deporting illegal immigrants.
