But the folks over at the Cato Institute have listed seven of the best reasons why the Massachusettes Style government-run healthcare plan currently getting the most attention in Congress won’t suffice.

I only have one. Massachusettes.

You have to know Mass and Masshole legislators. Their mandatory health plan is an outgrowth of two things: first, MA is run by and for the insurance companies headquartered there, always has been, and they are making plenty of moolah off this idea.

Second, MA has a history of mandatory insurance in the automobile arena. When you go to register a car there, you either provide an in-effect policy of liability insurance to the DMV clerk, or the clerk will sell you one on the spot (and collect the premium for it up front). Otherwise, you don’t get your plates.

It’s just the Mass way of thinking. The other part of the Mass way of thinking, of course, is that none of the above applies if your name is Kennedy.

I was stationed there when Teddy drove off the Chappaquiddick Bridge and killed Mary Jo Kopechne. The papers, less liberal then, were full of speculation about the numerous laws Teddy was getting a pass on.
