RNS Quote of the Day: 08/05/08

Today’s quote is in response to this post from Megan McArdle at The Atlantic yesterday

I’ve never thought about it this way. But it’s true. The Democrats think we are too irresponsible to provide for our own retirement; we’re too stupid to pick our kid’s schools; we’re too selfish to care for the poor without being forced; we’re too reckless to find our own day care; we’re too gluttonous to decide where to eat; we’re too dim to see the benefits of buying a house; we’re too nasty to pay our workers or care for them properly; we’re too short-sighted to conserve energy; and we’re too mean to clean the environment. Government must force our hand on all these things through taxes or regulations.

Apparently, the only we thing we are qualified to do is vote. Even if we’re convicted felons.

As proof of his point, I offer this new ordinance out of the UK which I have little doubt will soon find its way to our shores. Most likely in the Peoples Republic of Californistan or Bloomberg’s Newyorkingrad

West Norfolk Council spent about £450 sending 200 shakers, which have only four holes, to 39 shops in the area.

It said it hoped the scheme would help residents limit their salt intake to the guideline maximum of 6g a day.

A spokesman for the National Federation of Fish Friers called the scheme a “gimmick” and said customers would just shake the containers more.

Graham Adderson, 62, who owns the Downham Fryer, in Downham Market, said: “I think the scheme is hilarious.

“If you want to put salt on your fish and chips and there are only four holes, you’re just going to spend longer putting more on.”

No, bonehead Brits, what the restaurant patrons will do with those 4-holers is unscrew the lids and pour the salt directly on their food, resulting in even more salt than would have been put on with a standard salt shaker.
