“Colonel Johns… looked across at Bond.
‘[It’s] one of the new Savage 99Fs, Weatherby 6-by-62 scope, five-shot repeater with twenty rounds of high-velocity .250-3000. Lightest big-game lever-action on the market. Only six and a half pounds. It belongs to a friend… won’t miss it if it doesn’t turn up. It’s been tested and it’s okay up to five hundred [meters]…. Single-pull, and it’s a hair-trigger. Keep your finger off until you’re sure you’ve got him. And keep outside three hundred if you can. I guess these men are pretty good themselves. Don’t get too close.’ …
His other hand went to Bond’s shoulder. ‘Our Commissioner’s got a motto: Never send a man where you can send a bullet… So long, Commander.'”
–Ian Fleming, “For Your Eyes Only,” 1959.
My Father-in-Law had one. It was in 250 savage, if I remember correctly. He loved that rifle.
Sadly, the Chief passed away in October of 2006.
Sorry for your loss. I believe the .250 Savage and the .250-3000 are the same thing. The “-3000” was a marketing gimmick as the cartridge was the only one at the time to propel a hunting-weight bullet at 3000 fps.
David, you would be correct. http://www.gunsandammomag.com/gun_columns/99_1021/
I just got a tingle up my leg.
