Bulletproof Parchment?

I think not.

However, while I disagree with their path, I must give them their due.

10 months ago the homicidal ex-boyfriend of Rebecca Griego stormed into her office at the University of Washington and shot her with a stolen firearm. He then shot himself.

Prior to this, Rebecca and her sister, Rachel had each filed for protection orders against the guy, but he was never served because he was staying with friends and/or in hotels and had no fixed address.

I can’t figure out why they are taking this path, but Rachel and their mother were in Olympia on Wednesday pushing for a bill that would allow the mailing of protection orders after two unsuccessful in-person attempts.

I have absolutely zero belief that being able to have served this guy with papers would have stopped him. And since he had no fixed address, mailing them to him would not have worked.

I do understand the need for some sort of “fixing” of the process that Rachel and her mother deem to have failed them, but I cannot even contemplate their current path.

Which is why I do not know why they aren’t be the first in line to testify for the lifting of the “Gun Free Zone” status of the UW campus instead of, or at the very least, including this very ineffectual bill.

A stack of protection orders thick enough to make a phone book wouldn’t have stopped the guy from murdering her at her workplace, but the knowledge that there may be someone nearby who would help him shake off his mortal coil quite possibly would have.

As this story found by Uncle yesterday, sadly, goes to prove quite well.
