They’re just figuring this out?

I could have told them this years ago.

Economists see aid to poor nations as ineffective

Aid to poor countries has little effect on economic growth, and policies that rely on such claims should be reexamined, two former International Monetary Fund economists wrote in a paper released this month.

“We find little evidence of a robust positive correlation between aid and growth,” wrote Raghuram Rajan, who stepped down as IMF chief economist at the end of 2006, and Arvind Subramanian, who left the IMF this year, said.

“We find little evidence that aid works better in better policy or institutional environments, or that certain kinds of aid work better than others,” they added.

“Our findings suggest that for aid to be effective in the future, the aid apparatus will have to be rethought.”

Yeah, something along the lines of “No aid until you get rid of your tin pot dicator.”

Of course, those on the left are going to scream that the people running the country are incosequential and that this is just another attempt by “The Joos” to not have to give any more moeny out.

I think we should cut off all foreign aid, unless it benefits the US significantly somehow

Why should a country (or person) learn to support themselves as long as they can get some other sucker to support them? If a country can’t support itself, obviously it is doing something wrong, and needs to change. Just propping it up doesn’t help, it just makes it even less independent.

  3. Honestly, aid in most forms causes problems. Our welfare state has produced generation after generation of helpless, dependent individuals who have no tools to care for themselves or their families. It’s like crack to them. They get hooked on the government teat, and don’t want to give it up. Why should they?

I’m a strong believer in aid when it’s about education, not hand-outs.

Give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish, and he’ll feed himself for the rest of his life.
