Teach a man to phish

And he’ll send death threats in emails.

Death threats part of latest email scam

It’s a scam being sent to people here in the Northwest and according to the FBI, around the world. It’s the latest way con artists are trying to get your money — by scaring it out of you.

Josh McCudden started his day, like always, recently by reading his email. What he opened was a death threat offering the Bellingham man a chance to save his life.

“So I opened it up, started reading it, and it was a threat on my life,” said McCudden.

“I took pity on you. That is why I have made up my mind to help you, if you are willing to help yourself,” read the email.

The sender wrote that a close family member or friend had hired him to kill McCudden, but said McCudden could live if he sent the hit man $5,000 immediately, $7,000 more later, and kept the transaction quiet.

“They did say not to contact police, to keep it hush, hush. Don’t even tell your family and friends because it could be one of them,” said McCudden.

What a lame scam. Who wouldn’t contact law enforcement on something like this?

Or maybe, I could find a scammer dumb enough to meet me somewhere and let him play “moving target”?
