I met John Thomas a couple of years ago when he came here to Spain while doing research on Moor booty. He said quite frequently that Americans were very interested in Moor booty and that he was writing a book about finding Moor booty. I was glad to accompany him around the southern part of my native country and help him with his search.
When I received the news of John Thomas and his passing, I was devastated and did not leave the grounds of my father’s estate in Cartagena, mostly laying in my room and crying, for four days. After I finally became calm enough to open the door for the pleadings of my sister, Sevilla, she entered and asked what was wrong. I told her that a good friend of mine had passed and she asked whom. When I told her that he was an American who taught at an academy for women, she gasped and said John’s name.
I had had no idea previous to her exclamation that she had known him. It came as quite a startling discovery. So startling, that, quite without thinking about it, after having had now two very disturbing pieces of news come to me, that I got very angry at my sister and gave her a second reason to cry as well.
Which is why she cannot face the camera.
I cannot be mad at John for this. But Sevilla will pay dearly for some time.
My cousin Lucia will also pay. From what I understand, you will hear from her next week. She might not be able to face the camera by then either.
Isn’t “John Thomas” the name Lady Chatterly gave to the male member of her lover, Mellors, the gardener, in “Lady Chatterly’s Lover?”
