I know Quebecers like to think

That Quebec is it’s own little island, but I didn’t know that it was Fantasy Island

Quebecers will be distinct from other Canadians in another way starting this fall: they’ll have the country’s first designated “carbon tax” to help fight global warming.

Natural Resources Minister Claude Bechard, who announced Wednesday that a 0.8-cent-a-litre carbon tax will come into force on Oct 1, added that he hopes the oil companies, which are reporting record profits, would absorb the tax and not pass it on to the consumer.

Yes, because not only do they own refineries, they also have vast vineyards of plants that grow money. They will be able to harvest the dollar bills from these plants to supplement the stockholder’s checks.

What a fuckin’ idiot.

The tax, Bechard said, is based on the “polluter pays” principle. “That is not negotiable,” the minister said.

If that is the principle, and the end-user (aka: the motorist) is the one doing the polluting, then the fuel producer absolutely must pass that cost onto the consumer in order to stay true to the principle.

Ahh, the nuance of socialists: Mentioning principles, but demanding people and corporations to do the exact opposite.
