Friday Fun Time

Since I now have only an AM/FM radio in Walker: Commuter Ranger to listen to while driving to and from the place of employ, I have become quite well aquainted with my local radio. It is a bit better than I remember it, but still not great.

While I do have 12 presets on the head-unit, I only use 11 of them. You’ll find no hip-hop or Top 10 here, ladies and gents.

What you will find is that they all stream live:

1: 89.5 KNHC – The local electronica station run as a classroom in one of the local high schools. If you’re up late at night on the weekends (or not so late on the Eastern Seaboard) tune in for some rather different electronic stuff.

2: 94.1 KMPS – The most popular country station in the area.

3: 95.7 KJR – All around rock, though mostly older stuff. The call letters used to belong to an AM station that was very popular in the 70’s.

4: 96.5 KJAQ – Calling themselves “JackFM”, they play nearly anything, sticking to “The Hits” of whatever era they feel like.

5: 97.3 KBSG – They call themselves “The Oldies Station”, but I’ve noticed that their definition of “Oldies” extends to 1981 these days. But it is still the only place to hear Elvis and early Beatles tunage.

6: 99.9 KISW – The one actual rock station in Seattle. AC/DC and Old Metallica mixed in with other “harder” stuff.

7: 100.7 KKWF – The newest Country station in the area. Not bad at all.

8: 102.5 KZOK – One of Seattle’s oldest Rock stations. Still playing the music of their heyday, 70’s rock. You want to hear some Zep or Deep Purple, this is where you tune in.

9: 102.9 KNBQ – “Q Country” They play both “Country” and “Western”! You can actually hear Johnny Cash and Hank Williams on this station. The call letters used to belong to the Top 10 Pop station in the 80’s.

10: 103.7 KMTT – “The Mountain”. A lot of “Comtemporary” but they have their moments.

11: 107.7 KNDD – “The End”. Alt rock. Heyday was during the Seattle explosion. Still play a lot of Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. But also plays a lot of this Emo crap. Caution is advised. We didn’t call it “The Trend” back then for no reason.

Now it is your turn. Put your favorite local radio stations that stream live in the comments.

My favorite station in the Seattle area is now defunct:

Classic Country AM 1090 is now “Progressive Talk 1090”

KBPS…all classical all the time, with knowledgeable DJ’s who can actually discuss the history of what they’re playing.

    They stream on http://www.allclassical.org

Dono if they have gone digital, but I have no digital FM receivers, so I can’t tell.

Jack FM 96.5 in Seattle appears to be run by CBS.

I listen to Jack FM 105.5 in Denver.
No DJs, contests, weather, traffic, or live remotes.Only music and ads. I like it.
Doesn’t seem to be related to CBS.

    Thanks for the blog.

  5. Actually, there still is a KJR AM in Seattle. It’s one of the sports stations, either 850 or 950, I forget which. They’re both on my AM presets.

Here’s a great reference: a list of HD radio stations.

Now, to see about getting an HD receiver…

I have radios in my cars. I think. I don’t listen to ’em anyway. There’s far too much data input to my central nervous system whilst driving without electronically introduced noise added to the mix.

Ads drive me nuts, most (99.7%) broadcast music does the same. It’s far too short a drive these days anyway.
