Gun Porn!

Yay!

I finally got my Hensoldt Fero Z24 scope mounted up to the Hun Bastard.

Ain’t it purty! Wait, the Hun Bastard will not stand for being called “purty”. Somebody get me a better word, stat!

This will be rifle number two of three I plan to work with at the Boomershoot firing line. I’m also bringing a couple other things to Boomer-Hunt with. Those will be upcoming.

My only regret with taking the Hun Bastard is that I didn’t get around to getting the trigger work done, so I’ll have that to deal with. Though, in truth, I am not above taking advantage of the standard 20rnd mag capacity to complete an area fire drill on a boomer.

This scope is quite impressive, even for just a 4x optic. I’m searching this here interweb for instructions on how to use the markings on the glass to my adavantage. Though, seeing as how this is ex-Kraut Mil equipment, I’m pretty sure they’re set up for people, not 4″ wide boomers.

You can’t really see it because of my crappy photography, but when I bought this I also ordered the “Crosshair Illuminator” attachment. The batteries that came with it were dead, but I’m looking for more.

I’ll get some better pics when I take it out to zero it.

Seriously fellow HK91 clone owners, if you see one of these at a price below $400, snatch it up quick. Yes, I know that I haven’t posted a link to where I got it, but I’m being greedy because I don’t want them all gone before I can get a second one. Ask me nicely in an email and I might cut loose with the info, though.

    Check this out:

about 2/3 down the page is the info on reticle hashings and down farther is more.

They make a reference formula for using hashmarkings and a spinny wheel-O-reference for quick aquisition. The portion on the “range card” is good stuff too.

By the way, I am interested in a HK clone, what should I look for when examining used rifles? I am familiar with the usual wear and tear, but rifle specific info would help.

At the Bower Shooting Clinic last year I got intensive training on reticle ranging and use of reticle marks for all sorts of long-range goodness. I’ll send you some stuff.

Pete, check you email box in the next couple days.

Phil, the correct military terms are: USN & USMC: “Squared Away”, Old Army and USAF “Strac”

    or, just plain “Regulation”

Of the above list, I prefer the Navy-USMC term.

Jebus! I get a woody just looking at the Hun Bastard, only male what’s ever done that to me…maybe it’s the wood, my CETME has wood originally, but it’s been replaced with OD plastic G-3 furniture. I still have the original CETME wood, though, maybe I should darken it down and put it back on….I have that STANAG claw mount, but they want $200 for the rings to convert it to US-standard so it will take a US scope. I have seen STANAG scopes that will go right on the mount for $400, in about 3 different places, so I suspect that they aren’t as rare as you think.

When I was in the Navy, “squared away” was indeed the proper military terminology for it…

We’d also say “sh*t hot!” or even “super sh*t hot!”…

    Yar!

When I sold my HK91 back in 1981, I was met by the buyer and a friend of his who already had a HK. The friend field-stripped my rifle and examined the bolt where the rollers engage it. He told me that his bolt had been peened by the rollers because the previous owner had reloaded it with excessive loads. So I guess that is something to look for.

    Phil,
Can’t email nicely without an address…? Pretty please? I saw the Sarco ad a year ago in SGN for the PTR at $590-ish. Can’t touch ’em for anywhere near that. I’d love to know where you’re shopping! Bitte? Wo kann ich der “HK clone” gekaufen?

I got one of the Sarco PTR 91s on sale a year or so ago, $595 as I recall. It was the basic version, no flash hider/muzzle brake, and minimum US parts count. The stock narrow handguard sucked, it got so hot it warped, and didn’t provide much heat shielding. I put a British HK wide front guard and bipod on it, and was then told that I’d messed up my US parts count on 922 R compliance, whatever it’s called. I got a US made sear, hammer and trigger from JLD, and had them installed with trigger job done by Bill Springfield, which got me good for the parts count again. I’ve since put a muzzle brake and Bushnell 3200 Elite 10×40 scope on it (no STANAG mount here, a cheapie from CTD, but it works fine). The gun rocks. Pity surplus 7.62×51 is rare as hen’s teeth nowadays, I have been saving my SA milsurp ammo for a rainy day. 91s/G3s do tend to mangle brass. My gun has handled Silver Bear ammo fine, though.

PS Accessories for the G3s and such can get pricey. JLD’s wide tactical front guard is $159. I got my wide front guard from Top Notch Accessories at a very good price. Again, you should be aware of your parts count when changing anything out. Here’s Top Notch’s website:

JLD has changed their name to PTR 91 Inc. Here’s their website:
