But ran out of time (more on that tomorrow).

83 felons freed as state uses too much jail space

Eighty-three convicted criminals — including high-risk sex offenders and violent felons — have been released from two King County jails because they exceeded the total that the state Department of Corrections was allowed to place there.

The felons had all been placed in the jails, in Seattle and Kent, because they were accused of violating the terms of their release from prison. A significant number of the offenders had been arrested because they had missed mandatory appointments with community corrections officers, said a spokeswoman for the union that represents the officers.

Other violations included failing to attend mandatory drug or mental-health treatment.

The mass release on Friday, ordered by the Department of Corrections (DOC), came after repeated complaints from King County about the DOC booking too many people into county facilities.

I am so glad I left that county. They’re not even thinking about building more jails or contracting out to send prisoners to other jurisdiction’s jail systems.

83 more child moletsers and/or hardcore criminals on the streets earlier than expected. They had planned to let more out, but because of the public outcry they decided against it. Of course, no amount of public outcry could make them put those released back in jail.

Meanwhile, the state cannot seem to keep track of the child molesters it has let out previously

A state law aimed at stopping convicted pedophiles from living near schools is a complete failure.

We can prove it.

KIRO Team 7 Investigative Reporter Chris Halsne used high-tech computers to locate more than 900 known child rapists and molesters living inside “school protection zones.”

A convicted child molester lives on a corner in Tacoma, while a school playground is right across the street.

How close is too close?

Last June, state lawmakers thought they answered that question: convicted pedophiles must live at least 880 feet away from a school.

Now, I’m not a fan of the arbitrarily picked “880 feet” rule. That is as dumb as “10 round magazines” or “18in barrels” (how do you like being treated like a child molester, folks?).

However, because child molesters have proven that they cannot be trusted and therefore need to be given an arbitrarily picked distance to stay away from children, I suppose it will have to do.

But why can’t the state run the same diameter from a school” program that the news reporters do?

10 will get you 20 that they’ll claim it is a lack of funding.

You know, liberals are always complaining about there being too many people in jail, and most of them being there for non-violent drug posession crimes. If that’s the case, and you’re some nit-wit paper-pusher working the penal system, why not release some of those guys if you think the jails are too crowded and leave the real scum inside? Sex offenders and violent felons need to be behind bars.

880 feet: length of an Iowa Class Battleship. One of those would be nice to have.

I believe the Iowa is still sitting in Suisun Bay just north of me (not far from where the Glomar Explorer was berthed in my youth). Over the last several years, when coming home from trips north, it’s been nice to catch the battleship’s profile from the long stretch of 680 north of the Benicia Bridge. Keep waiting for them to homeport it someplace for tours….
