RNS Quote of the Day: 02/20/07

Admiral Ahab over at the WhatWouldJohnWayneDo blog made mention of his unappreciation of the “black rifles” yesterday, in the wake of the Dumbo-Zumbo blogsplat. There is none of the Zumbo-BS about their right to exist or people’s right to own them and use them as they please in Ahab’s statement, they just don’t do anything for him.

As I made mention in his comments section, I have somewhat of the same feelings towards them, despite the fact that I own a number of them. I can appreciate a fine rifle, and I own the rifles I appreciate (and can afford). But give me a bolt action rifle or a pump shotgun and I’m downright happy.

The semi-autos I own are fine examples of their design and I appreciate them for those qualities and also for the qualities that are mentioned in today’s quote.

Combat Rifles were not designed for plinking, although they are great fun for such. They were not designed for target shooting or for deer hunting, though many can suffice. Rugged, powerful and self-loading military rifles were designed to incapacitate and kill men in great numbers and at great distances. When Bad Guys appear suddenly and singly at close range, a pistol will usually solve your problem. When they appear at greater numbers or greater distances, only a battle rifle will do. Lethal emergencies vary, and so do the tools necessary to solve them. Owning combat rifles is no cause for shame, for lethally aggressive men deserve to be shot, and shot well.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it right now: 2007 is my year of the semi-auto. Until Congress retires for the session, I will not feel safe without these rifles.

I meant to reply, I’m a Remington autoloader fan all the way when it comes to shotguns.

Of course, I’m also notably biased towards the 870 as well, so my favoring Remington shotguns as a general rule makes a lot of sense.

Get one of them blackl-rifles if you can, we can’t get ’em here in California. The guys who got them before the CA-AWB shoot rings around me and my Garand.

I bought a DPMS LAR-308 on Saturday, before the infamous post. I bought it because the rifle I went to buy wasn’t available yet, and it was WAY too nice of a gun to pass up. I spent over twice as much as I had planned and saved for the purchase. I’ll be eating Cup-o-Noodles for lunch and won’t see the inside of any food service for a couple of months.

Sunday at the range the rifle proved to be FAR more accurate than I could expect the rifle I intended to buy, honest sub 1″ groups at 200 yards with surplus ammo (Brittish, but surplus none the less)!!!

And the rifle I intended to buy? Browning BLR takedown, they aren’t available yet. I’m sure the LAR will out shoot it though!
