Good Common Sense / Bad Legislation

They say common sense just ain’t so common any more, and I agree with them.

But that doesn’t mean that I need the state to go and legislate it.

Washington State Senate Bill # 5067 – Requiring the use of headlights when the windshield wipers are in use.

It is just another reason for the Highway Patrol to pull folks over, like they don’t already have 9000 of them already.

I take it then that the users of Rain-X don’t have to use their headlights? You know some slimy lawyer is going to use that defense

  2. Michael says:

The state needs some way to generate revenue through traffic violations. How else is the Police Chief going to get that new Corvette for his wife.

  3. Rivrdog says:

This is a direct import from socialist Canada. They put this one on the books about a decade ago, and now require cars sold there to turn on the headlights, or the DTRL’s, when the wipers are activated.

If you accept the “logic” behind this law, you should also require all cars to be painted in ugly, screaming day-glow colors.

I have a better idea. Put the burden of noticing other drivers right were it belongs, on drivers. Enact a proper “driving while distracted” law, and REQUIRE all traffic collisions to be investigated to determine whether a driver distraction contributed to them. If it did, “no-fault” does not apply, and the distracted driver is liable for all costs to all parties.

Responsibility: what’s not to like about THAT?

Tennessee has had a similar law in effect for several years. I have never encountered anyone who was ticketed for violation of that law.

  5. Grumpy Old Ham says:

There’s supposedly the same law here in the PDR of Maryland. These idiots won’t even turn on their headlights until after dusk, let alone in the rain. Never seen anyone pulled over for that, but installation of the godforsaken revenue collectors known as “Red Light Cameras” continues apace.

Rivrdog, I’m with you on the responsibilty angle but who would be at fault when I sideswipe some moron driving a dark car without headlights at dusk because from the rearview of my Ram I can’t see him? It would also require law enforcement around here to actually work, rather than rely on electronic gadgetry to do the work for them (see above).
