I know he’s trying to be funny

But Garrison Keillor’s latest rant is even less funny than Michael Richards’ latest bit of notoriety.

Democrats intend to bring reform to Washington, and why not begin with the Senate? It has been sorely in need of reform for a century or so. Two senators per state is a good idea in theory, assuming they are half smart, but then you look at George Allen, a lumbering frat boy from the state of Madison and Jefferson, and you think, whoa, something is wrong with this picture. We need some horizontal control.

Let’s start at the beginning and redraw the map. First of all, is there a reason for Wyoming to exist as a state? I have often wondered about this. Why give two Senate seats to a half-million dime-store cowboys while California gets two seats for 34 million people? (Wyoming has roughly the population of Sacramento.) It’s OK if Wyoming sends somebody with brains and an independent streak, but when they send a couple of Republican hacks, it makes no sense.

Ha, fucking ha.

In this same vein, I was watching the replay of the Colbert Report yesterday and listened to Harry Shearer (of Spinal Tap and Simpson’s fame) state that the reason people in California and New York look down on the folks living in “Fly-Over Country” is because the people still in middle America weren’t smart or talented enough to get themselves out.

Such disrespect for the people who actually work to make the nation function can only be rewarded by cheering them on until they piss enough people off and lose national power again.

Someone send Garison Keillor back to high school civics class. I don’t know what he was doing when he was there the first time, but civics class is where I learned why each state his two senators, no less, no more, regardless of population.

As for Mr. Shearer, I’m from flyover country and look down upon many of the people in LA and NYC because they’re too stupid to get out. Humans go nuts when there’s too many of them crowded into too small an area, and the nuttiness and crime in those cities are proof.
