Because they’re Pro-Choice

No, this isn’t about the approval of “Plan B” (though I think the pharmacists with ethics objections helped screw that pooch for the Anti’s), this is a follow-up to my post about the homophobes in the Alabama Democratic Party from Wednesday.

For those who missed it (tsk tsk), the state Dem Party Chairman was actively funding the suit to kick the woman who won the Primary, who happens to be a lesbian, off the ballot and replace her with his chosen candidate.

Yesterday afternoon, he both succeeded and failed. Not only was the winner of the primary kicked off the ballot, but the Dem Party committee also kicked the loser of the Primary out of the running.

A Democratic Party committee has disqualified an openly gay candidate for the Alabama Legislature and the woman she defeated in the primary runoff.

Committee members ruled tonight that both women violated a party rule that party officials say no other candidate has obeyed since 1988.

The committee voted 5-0 to disqualify Patricia Todd and Gaynell Hendricks. Todd was attempting to become the state’s first openly gay legislator.

Committee chair Amy Burks said earlier today the party’s executive committee would make the final decision and select a nominee for the seat from Birmingham’s House District 54 at a meeting in Montgomery Saturday.

State Democratic Party Chairman Joe Turnham was “very surprised” by the decision, said Zac McCrary, a party spokesman. Turnham believes the party’s executive committee might change the decision based on an “archaic bylaw,” McCrary says.

Attorney Bobby Segall told the committee earlier today that if the party disqualified Todd for not filing a financial disclosure form with the party chairman it would also have to disqualify the party’s nominee for governor, Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley.

Todd defeated Hendricks by 59 votes in the July 18 runoff election in Birmingham’s District 54. There is no Republican opposition in the race and the Democratic candidate will likely be the district’s next House member.

Did you catch that last line? That is why this is so important to them. They don’t want the public to have a choice in the matter, they just want their ideologue in DC.

I think he’d be their ideologue in Montgomery, not DC. (Sounds like an Alabama house race, not congressional.)

  2. Army of Dad says:

    I believe Aughtsix is correct.

However my comment is more along the lines of “The Democrats broke some rules and played three card monty with an election…oh like that’s news!”

  3. Analog Kid says:

    Whoopsie! I stand corrected, Gentlemen.
