Cool Stuff That Goes Bang

Why must I have absolutely no free money right now? Of course, if you ask the Analog Wife, she’ll ask why I want another gun.

Do you remember when I linked to Mr. Completely’s Rimfire Round-Up last week? Well, I was leisurely reading through it and found this report by Azreel at FreeSpiritMind on the AMT AutoMag II in .22WMR

That pic is from a gun I found on-line at the same place I bought my newest Ruger MKII

My problem now is that I cannot even afford to go to the range and break the MKII in until at least the second weekend in March, which also means that I’ll miss the opening match of pin shooting season on February 26th (sorry, Mr. C).

So now I’ve got the perfect Iron Sight Class pin gun and I just found the perfect Optics Class pin gun, but I can’t afford to buy it for another month or so.

Oh well, I might as well just pout to myself because not only did I find the .22 Mag gun, but during the search I found something else I also must have.

Go ahead, click on that pic. You will then be looking at an AMT AutoMag II self loading pistol in 30 Carbine.

Now tell me you wouldn’t want one of those too.

Mr. Completely will be out with another Rimfire Round-Up in a couple days.

Until then, you can tide yourself over with the latest Carnival of Cordite.

Ah, yes. Back in the day I was quite enamored of the AMT line. It started, of course, with Arnold’s Longslide Hardballer .45 1911 in the first Terminator.

Along the way I picked up a few original AMT pamphlets & other literature. (“AMT DAO Backup! Smallest semi-auto .45 in the world!”) If I can find it, I’ll send it your way.

By the by, Lee Jurras, one of the fellows involved with the Auto-Mag concept, regularly posts as “grandcurmudgeon” in the Sixgunner.com forums.

  2. AZREEL’s post had the same effect on me! There’s one in .22 mag at Sam’s in S. Everett, or at least it was there several days ago. I got talking to the guy at Sam’s and he mentioned that in his opinion there was a lot of variation in the AMT .22 mags. Some worked well, and others did not.

I don’t think it’d be too good as a pin gun though. More power than you need for pin tops, and it doesn’t have enough power to get a full sized pin off the table.

since you will be shooting iron sight pins with your new MK. II, another MK. II for optical sight makes a lot of sense…

  3. ……..and thanks for the mention of the Rimfire Roundup. Got any rimfire posts?

Heya Mr. C. If I could afford to go shooting I’d have one, but right now, nope.

    Thanks for the mention.

I can’t tell you how much in love I am with this gun. I came across one while my wife and I were out at the range – the fellow next to us had one, and he’d noticed my wife struggling with my 1911 in .45ACP – too much power for too little hands.

Anyway, she tried it and loved it, and I decided to get her one for christmas that year. Unfortunately the one that I found had a myriad of problems, the magazine being but one. My wife eventually took a liking to my Sig P226 (which is now “hers”) and left the AutoMag II to me to fix.

It took a while, but now the thing runs like a champ, and we’re BOTH in love with it. It’s just a neat and FUN target pistol. not really practical for anything, but it is a heck of fun way to punch tiny holes in paper.

I’ve owned an AMT AutoMag II for about 6 years and have very little problems with it. You just have to keep it “real clean” I mean spot less. Inside the barrel there are little grooves that grab the shell, if they are not real clean they won’t hold on casing a miss fire.
    Hope that that helps.

P.S. It’s a Great target gun “if I do say so my self” and I do.
