London Calling

(Note: I wrote the below before learning that I will not be attending Boomershoot this year.)

Determining the best .300 Weatherby load for Boomershoot will have to wait another week or so. We’re kicking off what looks to be a month insanely full of travel (Europe, Idaho, Nebraska) with Our Honeymoon.

My wife and I have been together for twelve years now, but only formally tied the knot two years ago. Twelve years ago, we said we loved each other, and that nothing either of us could ever do to the other could cause us to part. It was true then as it’s true now, and any piddly state certificate is pretty darn meaningless compared to that.

Also, our idea of a wedding is a nice big party for our friends and loved ones, and we just couldn’t afford either the time or the money to have one until a couple of years ago. (Even so, it wouldn’t have happened without lots of assistance from my Mom. Thanks again, Mom!) At that time, we spent a nice nuptial night in the Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa — but lovely as that was, it wasn’t a real honeymoon.

So tonight we’re off to London, first time for both of us.

I’ll satisfy my Sherlock Holmes obsession by visiting the Holmes Museum at 221 B Baker Street, we’ll try warm English beer at a pub or two, and see the usual tourist sights, but our main sightseeing will be on Sunday, and the reason I’ve categorized this post under Have Gun Will Travel is:

The arms and armor exhibits at the Tower of London!

The wife just thinks we’re going to visit an English castle. Little does she know what’s inside! My reading material on the plane will be W.W. Greener’s classic The Gun and Its Development, so I’ll be able to tell a snaphaunce from a wheellock from a flintlock. If they let me take pictures, I’ll post them here a fortnight hence. Look, I’m already talking like a Brit!

Well congratulation to the both of you and happy travels.

In a somewhat strange coincidence, the Analog Wife and I will also be celebrating the 10th anniversary of our first date this month, on April 16th.

It’s a sneaky little trick I have of putting personal events next to other, larger events. When I see the newscasts of people lining up at the post office to drop off their paperwork to the taxman, I know I have to have a gift when I come home in the morning.

Unfortunately, it’ll sap my $$$ for Buy a Gun Day.

See, you need to move to a state like California, where you can “purchase” a firearm on one day, then wait the state-mandated waiting period and pay the balance when you pick it up.

The Encore pistol arrived at my gunsmith’s last week, and is waiting patiently for me to return from Europe, but I haven’t paid for it in full yet even though for state recordkeeping purposes I’ve already bought it.

BTW, it’s not our anniversary — it’s just that this is my wife’s spring break, so if we were gonna go, this was the time.

Oh yeah, does the fact that I’m commenting at 3 am indicate that I’m still up, in a caffeine-fueled packing frenzy? Yes it does.

If you have the time, be sure to check out the Imperial War Museum across the bridge from Westminister Church. Also, if you go walking over on Victoria Street you should be able to find several small “Regimental” museums run by old timers. They are really interesting as they usually have the history of the regiment along with displays and docents who can tell you the history .

    Really going to Nebraska?

I will be there in the middle of May.

My wife and I went to the UK last summer. You will really enjoy the Tower of London. I was in heaven looking at all of the weapons displays and my wife had to drag me out of there.

I missed the Imperial War Museum. I can’t figure out how I missed it as our hotel was just a few blocks away…

Overall, London is excellent, we had a blast.

If you can, I highly recommend you head down to Bath to see the old Roman structures around the hot springs. Bath is a beautiful town (great shopping for the wife too) and the history is wonderful. Even Kim du Toit recommends it!

Lucky, lucky you. Someday I’d love to go see England and it’s rich history. I love old places and things (my husband, who’s 9 years older than I am) says that’s why I married him!

When you get back and if you enjoy reading, try “SARUM, The Novel of England”. It’s 10,000 years of an “imagined vision” of history, that will fascinate you.

Have a wonderful time, take lots of picures and store up the memories.
