RNS Quote of the Day: 07/25/11

Last week’s assignment in my Humanities class had us reading Ralph Waldo Emerson’s treatise “Self-Reliance”. We were required to read it and then pull quotes from it and comment on them.

I would like to present the quotes I chose to comment on to you all and have you comment on them. I’ll be doing so from now until Friday. Enjoy!

Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members. Society is a joint-stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater. The virtue most request is conformity. Self-reliance is its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs.
